Displacement method solutions in differential form are formulated for thermally loaded linearly elastic beams and plates whose lateral deflections obey the Euler-Bernoulli-Navier and Germain-Lagrange-Kirchhoff differential equations. Deflections and section moments caused by temperature gradient load are calculated. The classical analysis of beams and plates by differential and integral calculus is linked to the modern analysis by matrices. The proposed way of looking at the classical analysis and the unifying terminology suggested are intended to promote clarity and understanding of the subject matter, and thereby facilitate systematic and correct computations. No fundamentally new solutions are given. (Author)
