An Examination of Cone-Penetrometer Methods for Determining the Liquid Limit of Soils

The report reviews the methods in use for the determination of the liquid limit of soils by cone penetrometers. It is concluded that the cone penetrometer test offers considerable advantages over the present Casagrande apparatus. It is easier to perform, the results are not so dependent on the design of the apparatus or the manner in which it is used and it is applicable to a wider range of soils. The method developed by the Laboratoire Central des Ponts et Chaussees in Paris employs standard apparatus. Its use was therefore examined in detail with a range of British soils and different operators. This work showed that the method and apparatus are suitable for use as a standard test. (Author)
