A simple, compact device for generating plane stress waves in materials is considered. The device uses a relatively small explosive charge to propel a metal flyer to flat impact on a flat surface. The impact velocity may be varied over a range of approximately 0.2 to 2.0 millimeters per microsecond, by adjusting certain design parameters. The impact duration (under certain conditions) may be varied from approximately 0.1 to 0.6 microseconds. A discussion of the fundamentals of shock physics is presented, and the uses of plane waves in basic equation of state studies is described. Along with the design concept of the flying plate generator, an analysis of the behavior is presented. A two-dimensional computer code (TOODY) is used to further study the metamorphosis of the flyer. The results are shown to agree with experiment and with the analyses, and to verify certain assumptions regarding the behavior of the device. The technique for fabricating the generator is discussed.
