A range of standard and Hi-proof stainless steels was welded using both manual metal arc and metal inert gas techniques. Nitrogen determinations were then carried out at various positions within the weld. The Hi-proof welds were found to pick up considerable amounts of nitrogen from the parent plate. Nitrogen pick up in the standard grades was much less although some pick up did occur, probably by contamination from the surrounding atmosphere. The effect of nitrogen pick up on the ferrite content of the welds was examined and the results confirmed that the increase of nitrogen had resulted in a reduction of the ferrite content. (Author)
