Blood Flow Considerations to Minimize Thrombosis.

Experimental studies of thrombogenesis are presented for two flow geometries; (1) pipe flow of constant shear,and (2) separated regions within a stagnation point flow configuration. The pipe flow studies have shown the importance of controlled entrance conditions and indicate that thrombus growth within a small lumen is controlled by the flux of blood elements to the thrombus rather than the rate of release of activated proteins. Separated flow experiments revealed thrombus formation in high shear regions downstreat from the separated region. This had not previously been observed. Within a separated flow region,thrombus formation and growth appears to be controlled by the flux of platelets across the boundary of separation.
