Seawater Desalination With PBI Hollow Fiber Reverse Osmosis Membranes.

Laboratory evaluations have shown that the reverse osmosis properties of PBI (polybenzimidazole) hollow fiber membranes are adequate for a single-pass desalination of seawater at an operating pressure of 1,000psi. In field evaluation tests against chlorinated sea water total dissolved solids concentrations as low as 108to 174ppm were reported. The outstanding reverse osmosis properties were achieved by annealing PBI hollow fibers in a free-to-shrink condition for 5minutes in ethylene glycol at 165C. A research study of spinning parameters yielded the spinning conditions necessary to obtain fibers with the necessary filament properties and dimensions. Heavy chlorination did not at all affect PBI membrane performance over the test period studied.
