Mass transfer coefficients from virtually neutrally buoyant spheres and discs were measured by observing the rate of dissolution of sparingly soluble organic solutes in water and water-glycerol solutions. An extensive experimental investigation of all the important independent transport variables was conducted, with special emphasis on studies with industrial scale equipment. A theory is developed on the basis of Kolmogoroff's notion of locally isotropic turbulence, and generalized correlations which are consistent with the proposed theory are presented. Attention is drawn to the mass transfer limited growth of ice crystals. The specific motivation for this research was the freeze desalination process. As ice crystals grow as disc-shaped particles, it is important to study this particular geometry.
