Study to Establish Seismic Protection Provisions for Furniture, Equipment and Supplies for VA Hospitals

The purpose of this study is to make recommendations to protect hospital equipment, furniture, and supplies in the event of an earthquake. By providing protection provisions in Veterans Administration (VA) hospitals, the life and safety of patients, visitors and staff would be protected and essential activities during and following a major earthquake could be continued. Post-earthquake photographs are shown which point out some deficiencies in hospital equipment. Essential items and requirements for their protection are listed. A manual of generic adaptations of equipment and a schedule of costs is included. A catalogue of essential hospital activities following a major earthquake is listed. Normal activities and post-earthquake activities are contrasted, and essential items are identified for post-earthquake activities. Technical seismic and engineering information are provided in appendices. Selected references are listed.
