Spectral Band Positioning for Purposes of Bathymetry and Mapping Bottom Features from Satellite Altitudes.

An analysis was performed to determine the proper positioning of a 100nm wide spectral band for purposes of mapping water depth and bottom features using a LANDSAT series satellite. Calculations were performed for the condition of clear marine atmospheres and relatively clear coastal and oceanic waters. The results of the analysis indicate that a shift in the present LANDSAT band 4 (500nm to 600nm) to shorter wavelengths is desirable. Positioning the band to span the spectral region 480nm to 580nm would serve to increase the utility of LANDSAT for the specified application.
