National Register Bulletin 28: Using the UTM Grid System to Record Historic Sites

The publication is an introduction to the Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) Grid System and its application to mapping historic and archeological sites. The manual was written to provide a uniform procedure for recording site locations in the National Register of Historic Places. The UTM method has advantages of speed, precision, and reliability over the previously used Geographic Coordinate System (latitude/longitude).
