The purpose of this summary report is to present--for the benefit of public policymakers and administrators,scientists,businessmen,special interest groups,private citizens,and the media--the findings of a recent comprehensive technology assessment of earthquake prediction. This assessment focuses on the following: (1) background on earthquakes; (2) outlook for earthquake prediction; (3) responding to earthquake prediction; (4) public policy issues related to earthquake prediction; (5) regional planning for uncertain predictions;and the long-term outlook.
