The Biological Potential and Ecological Factors of Small Woodlot Ecosystems in North Carolina

This report presents a general descriptive analysis and evaluation of the biological potential and ecological factors of small woodlot ecosystems in North Carolina. North Carolina ranks fifth among the states in area of commercial timberlands. Over 245,000 small woodlot owners own eighty percent of the forestland, but these lands are producing only forty percent of their potential. Reforestation, good management, and selective cuttings are difficult to practice on small woodlots, especially when so many owners are involved.
