A total of 1,776 Atlantic spadefish (Chaetodipterus faber) were col- lected during a sxi-year study of the Cape Fear River estuary and adjacent waters. All were 0-1 years old. Standard lengths ranged 26-110 mm and weights varied 0.5-7.2 g. Most specimens were captured at river and inlet stations. River channel station 18 provided 806 specimens. Most Atlantic spadefish were captured in August and September, especially in 1977 (1, 131 specimens). The young Atlantic Spadefish tolerated a wide variety of ecological conditions. A standard length- Weight relationship was calculated. The species supports a small sport and com- Merical fishery in oceanic waters of North Carolina.
