The Fate of Nitrogen Oxides in the Atmosphere -Summary of an Exploratory Study in Phoenix,Arizona.

An exploratory study in Phoenix,Arizona to determine the feasibility of carrying out a large-scale NOx atmospheric chemistry field program was conducted. A survey of geographical,meteorological,and emissions source characteristics of cities suggested Phoenix as a choice area because it represents a relatively isolated urban site where downwind polluted air masses can be studied with only minimal addition of fresh pollutants. The study involved monitoring of NO,NOx,PAN, HNO3and particulate nitrogen species within and downwind of Phoenix using a mobile van. Additional data on O3,CO, NO2and meteorology were obtained from state and county monitoring agencies. The results of this preliminary study,combined with available information on meteorology and air quality,indicated that the chances for a successful study of NOx chemistry in Phoenix were reasonable.
