Combustion of coals and combustible oils containing sulfur and roasting of sulfide minerals produce gases containing sulfur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen that are dispersed into the atmosphere and harm the environment. The patent proposes a process and the resulting plant for elimination of harmful compounds. The gas, passed through at least two absorption towers in countercurrent, encounters ammoniacal gas, which, neutralizing sulfur dioxide, forms ammonium sulfite and bisulfite. The solution obtained is sent to a pressure autoclave where reaction occurs between sulfite and bisulfite in a fixed ratio, producing ammonium sulfate solution and molten sulfur. The products have a purity of at least 99% and the gases sent to the atmosphere suitably meet the legal requirements. IMAGE
