摘要

The primary objective of this project is the development of an immunoassay method with instrumentation for the detection of organic contaminants of environmental concern. Successful assays have been developed for three contaminants of present-day concern,namely diquat,hexachlorophene and diethylstilbestrol. The basic technique used has been the development of an antibody to the contaminant of concern with subsequent detection of the contaminant by means of fluorescence polarization or intensity measurements. During the course of the work the use of ionizing radiation for the development of complex conjugate antigens is described. This is the first time such a technique has been reported and significantly reduces the cost of producing such complex conjugates compared to conventional chemical synthesis techniques. A highly specific and sensitive assay method for organic environmental contaminants has been demonstrated and simple associated instrumentation developed. Publications are listed in Appendices.
