Computer-Based Consultations in Clinical Therapeutics:Terminal Progress Report.

The report discusses the progress made in developing a computer program (called MYCIN) capable of diagnosis and therapy selection for certain varieties of infectious diseases. Using artificial intelligence techniques this program functions as a consultant and interviews a doctor about his patient,requesting information on clinical findings and results of laboratory tests. It relies on a store of judgmental knowledge (obtained from experts in infectious disease) to determine the conclusions which can be drawn from the answers it receives. In addition to describing the basic system philosophy,this report describes the progress made in increasing system competence,developing new user-oriented features,improving knowledge acquisition capabilities,solving particular technical problems,and evaluating the system's level of expertise.
