Numerical Integration of the Navier-Stokes Equations for Steady Flow Past a Wavelike Bulge on a Flat Plate

A two-dimensional, incompressible, viscous flow past a wavelike bulge on a flat plate is considered at high Reynolds numbers. The effect of the bulge upon the laminar boundary layer is investigated by solving the time-independent Navier-Stokes equations numerically in a domain around the bulge. The stream function and the vorticity are used as the dependent variables. Various finite-difference schemes are employed, and the resulting systems of equations are solved iteratively. The convergence of iteration processes and the accuracy of results are discussed. Numerical solutions are given for flows with a separation bubble behind the bulge, and for flows without separation. The results are in fair agreement with wind-tunnel measurements.
