Cattle on Feed (Released February 24, 2012)

Special Note: This report contains the 2011 monthly cattle on feed estimates for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head. Also included are the United States number of feedlots, inventory, and annual marketings by size group for 2010 and 2011. Data for total United States capacity of 1,000 or more head feedlots are also published in this issue. Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 11.8 million head on February 1, 2012. The inventory was 2 percent above February 1, 2011. Placements in feedlots during January totaled 1.85 million, 2 percent below 2011. Net placements were 1.77 million head. During January, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds were 445,000, 600-699 pounds were 430,000, 700-799 pounds were 525,000, and 800 pounds and greater were 447,000. Marketings of fed cattle during January totaled 1.82 million, 2 percent above 2011. Other disappearance totaled 81,000 during January, 42 percent above 2011.
