Logs and lumber are subject to attack by various wood-boring insects. In eastern Canada one of the most important insect species is Monochamus spp., sawyer beetles. Prompt utilizatation of logs before mid-August of the first year after cutting (provided the trees were alive or recently killed at time of felling) prevents most worm-hole damage. Lumber destined for export markets should not contain live borers.
