Triaxial Testing of Large Diameter Compacted Soil Specimens

The purpose of this study was to develop procedures for testing large diameter compacted soil specimens and to evaluate the feasibility of using the multiple-stage test procedure for large specimens. Results indicate that, except for extremely rocky soils, 6-inch diameter specimens would be adequate and minimize field sampling problems. It was concluded that the multiple-stage test is a viable alternate to the conventional three-specimen test procedure and reduces overall laboratory time to about 40 percent of that for conventional tests. Friction angles obtained from the multiple-stage tests usually agreed within two to three degrees with those from conventional tests.
