Development of an Electronic Data Interchange System for Port and Public Marine Terminal Management

This report presents the results of the first phase of a multiphase program to develop and demonstrate a system for accomplishing electronic exchange of shipping and transportation data between public marine container terminals and shippers, forwarders, brokers, ocean carriers, land carriers, consignees, and other agencies involved in intermodal operations. The requirements for electronic data interchange for intermodal operations were defined and a set of alternative system concepts were evaluated. An electronic switching system was selected for development. A plan for a pilot demonstration system is presented.
