Preparation and Evaluation of Optimized Hemodialysis Membranes.

Product and process definitions for an ultrahigh flux asymmetric cellulose acetate (CA) membrane suitable for both hemodialysis and hemofiltration have been established. Three standard CA membranes (wet) are now available in quantity for laboratory and clinical evaluation. They are:CA-3 (ultrahigh flux);CA-2 (low flux);and CA-1 (high flux). Dry, glycerinized CA-3membrane has exhibited good long-term storage stability over 145days. Tensile properties of dry membranes were found to be superior to those of wet membranes. Equipment to produce dry, glycerinized membrane in large quantity is being installed. No objectionable levels of metals were found in CA membranes;metal content was lower than that of Cuprophan. Efforts to produce a low molecular weight (1000 Daltons) membrane have been unsuccessful to date. It has been determined that fiber grade CA may be used in place of the discontinued plastics grade CA in fabricating CA-1membrane.
