The Science of Ceramic Machining and Surface Finishing II

The volume presents the proceedings of the Second Symposium on the Science of Ceramic Machining and Surface Finishing held at the National Bureau of Standards in Gaithersburg, Maryland, on November 13-15, 1978. The symposium was jointly sponsored by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, the American Ceramic Society, the Office of Naval Research, and the National Bureau of Standards. The purpose of the symposium was to review recent progress by discussion of current problems and research efforts. The proceedings contain forty of forty-three research papers, together with floor discussions, presented at the Symposium. Specific topics covered include: (1) mechanisms of abrasive machining and surface finishing; (2) technology of machining and surface finishing; (3) characterization of machined surfaces; and (4) effects of machining on the properties of ceramics. Also included is an edited discussion on hardness and its relation to machining.
