The Development and Use of Impact Rollers in the Construction of Earthworks in Southern Africa




One means of compacting earthworks is by delivering high-amplitude, low-frequency dynamic blows with the newly developed impact roller. The mechanical development of the roller and civil engineering experience with it are documented and full-scale field tests to determine the effects of impact rolling over buried structures are reported. Recommendations are made for the optimum use of compaction plant with reference to soil classification systems and a field-trial is proposed to discover earthworks compaction potential. A need to review existing specifications is also shown. Attempts to formulate a viable mathematical analysis of soil response to applied energy have proved unsuccessful. It is suggested that better and more efficient compaction of subgrades, reclaimed and waste materials by dynamic means, whereby uniform density gradients are achieved, may be expected in the future.
