Volume 1 contains a section of special addresses and a section dealing with anthropology. The special addresses were given by officials of the Department of the Interior and the National Park Service and by invited speakers. They discuss historic, present, and future roles of scientific research within the National Park System. The Anthropology section is divided into eight subsections containing 41 papers. The location and identification of cultural resources via remote sensing, oral history, and new anthropological methods are discussed. Three subsections are devoted to Archeological Studies at Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site, Arctic Anthropology, and studies at other national parks. Recent interpretations of the Anasazi Culture, another subsection, includes papers discussing social complexity, cultural traits, and water control at Mesa Verde. The Preservation Methods subsection includes papers concerning chemical stabilization methods. The last subsection concerns the National Park Service fire management program and its effects upon archeological resources.
