Volume 6 contains sixteen sections and 50 papers dealing with sociological research in the national parks. Nine papers present results of river recreation research concerned with interpreting the trends of river recreation, quality of visitor experience, and the application of research results. Eighteen papers are concerned with planning for and management of park visitors. Topics include, Backcountry and Wilderness, Human Behavior and Planning, Special Populations in Parks, Parks as Social Systems, and the Application of Social Sciences to Interpretation. Eight papers in the Interaction Between Man and Animals in Parks section deal with the social organization of man-animal encounters in the backcountry, effects of human presence on wildlife, and managing wildlife for human benefits.
