Identification, Evaluation, Selection, Criteria Development and Input of Mutagenicity Data to the Registry of Toxic Effects of Chemical Substances File

A system for identifying, evaluating, and developing selection criteria, and providing mutagenesis data from submammalian assay systems is described. Test protocols, sources of information, and access procedures for mutagenesis testing were identified and evaluated, and recommendations regarding protocols and information sources for inclusion in the Registry of Toxic Effects of Chemical Substances were made. Selection criteria were developed with regard to relevance to mutagenic testing parameters, consistency with established criteria, ease and nonambiguity of data input and file manipulation. The criteria were reviewed by experts at a 1 day conference, recommendations were made. No attempt was made to evaluate the significance of these findings or to rate the relative potency of a compound as a mutagenic risk to man.
