Shrinkage Effects in T-Fillet Welds in 5083 Aluminum

This report describes in detail experimental work on shrinkage effects in T-fillet welds in 5083 aluminum. The validity of tendon force concept when applied to welded T-sections has been investigated. A simple formula has been developed to predict mean compressive residual stresses at the flange of a two-pass T-fillet joint. Reasons have been suggested for the cause of randomness of stress gradient direction in the web (stiffener), as measured in stiffened panels.
