The volume is divided into two sections. Section I consists of text and section II of 120 tables. The text is designed to facilitate interpretation of the tables, to highlight the data, and to provide references to important or recent analytic studies and to major sources of data. It is not designed to analyze all of the data in this volume or in all epidemiological studies. The hope is that it will serve as an introduction to readers who will browse through the tables and find the information they need to make their own interpretations. An index of tables relevant to each chapter is provided at the end of the text and a subject index at the end of the tables to facilitate such use.
