Conclusions concerning this research are summarized below: (1) The dual membrane approach is based on the use of a metal membrane (such as Mo) for decomposing water at its heated surface and simultaneous permeation of hydrogen. This approach had to be discontinued. (2) The thermal gradient approach consists of decomposing water first, then quenching it to a lower temperature. Heating elements were made of ZrO2 ('Nernst lamps'). This was successfully done. However the project time was at an end before experiments using such elements could be carried out. (3) The two step approach where decomposition and permeation take place separately works very well.
