A novel type of drive system for a battery-powered road vehicle has been under development at NEERI for some time, and a number of reports and publications related to this work have already been produced. This particular type of drive system makes use of a multiple-ratio gearbox and resistors for starting, as compared to fixed-ratio systems employing chopper control. The advantages are that expensive power electronic components can be eliminated, standard automotive components can be used to a greater extent, and better speed and torque matching can be obtained between the battery as a source with limited power capability, and the traction requirements at the wheels. While a major aspect of the decision to investigate the novel drive system was the realization that the overall energy efficiency of the drive system under specific operating conditions would be improved by the use of the gearbox, no quantitative evaluation of this effect has as yet been made. This report contains the results of calculations done on the energy consumption of the two types of drive systems under operating conditions typical of town use.
