Feasibility of Bioacoustic Methods in Assessment of Striped Bass Spawning Behavior and Spawning Site Selection

Acoustic monitoring indicated that spawning striped bass in the laboratory, isolated from other biological sound sources, produce four kinds of sounds. These sounds were also detectable at field sites where striped bass were observed, and where striped bass eggs were common in previous studies. Feasibility of bioacoustic methods for location, timing and environmental correlation of striped bass spawning is established. Acoustic behavioral modification and sex-specific spawning stock assessment are potential management tools.
