Multilayer bearing structures were fabricated by arc plasma spraying of selected metallic alloy powders of mild and hardened steel test blocks which were then coated with a dry film lubricant. Five different alloys were investigated, and the quality and adherence of the as-sprayed layers were evaluated by optical and stereo microscopy, x-ray diffraction, and hardness testing. Results indicate that one of the alloys tested, an amorphous metal powder, has adhesion and interparticle bonding strength far superior to those of any standard available alloys. It is concluded that this material's high strength, expected corrosion resistance, and coating durability make it a good choice for a load supporting layer in a multilayer bearing structure.
