Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Treatment of Crush Injury and Acute Traumatic Peripheral Ischemia

This paper examines the safety and clinical effectiveness of hyperbaric oxygen therapy as an adjunct to conventional therapy in the treatment of crush injury and acute traumatic ischemia. There appears to be a rational theoretical basis for using hyperbaric oxygen therapy as an adjunctive treatment for crush injury and acute traumatic ischemia that is based on physiological studies demonstrating the effects of hyperbaric oxygen therapy on complex wounds. However, a substantial body of evidence to support its effectiveness in clinical practice is lacking. The complexity and diversity of these problems makes it difficult to establish controlled clinical studies. Consequently, there are no controlled clinical trails in the published literature. Reported serial experiences are also sparse.
