Analysis of the flow in practical metal-forming processes requires a sophisticated analytical method applicable to three-dimensional problems. A three-dimensional, finite-element Lagrangian code EPIC-3, originally developed for dynamic impact problems, was selected for the task because of its efficiency in computer storage and time. The EPIC-3 code was installed on a CRAY-XMP supercomputer, and modifications were made so that metal forming problems could be solved. The modified code was applied to an example shape-rolling problem, in which an oval rod is produced from a rectangular rod. In the simulation, the workpiece was drawn into the roll bite and deformed. The results demonstrate that the modified EPIC-3 is capable of solving practical 3-D metal forming problems. With further improvement, it may become a powerful tool to aid the design of dies and working sequences in metal forming.
