The paper has focused on the problems of handling commit and abort for 'compatible, concurrent transactions,' for which concurrency control can be specified on a type-specific basis, and whose operations may affect a shared object, but do not interfere with the other transactions of the concurrent set. The problem is important because it must be solved if the advantages of increased concurrency through use of Type-Specific Locking (TSL) is to be used, regardless of the particular approach that is taken to TSL. The paper has discussed a number of design approaches, pointing out inherent features and comparing their advantages and disadvantages. The solutions' applicability to a given system depends on features that the underlying hardware and operating system provide. The design work behind the paper was done on the PROFEMO system, which provides a rather rich set of features. (Copyright (c) GMD 1987.)
