The report reviews and summarizes what is known about collaborative research arrangements in biotechnology and analyzes the structure, scope, and potential problems, benefits, and outcomes of such collaborative activities. The primary focus of the study is on U.S. university-industry research collaborations. For the purposes of the study, collaborative research includes: institutional-institutional arrangements (such as those between a university and a corporation or firm, or those between a number of industrial partners and one or more universities -- often with state and/or Federal involvement) and individual-institutional arrangements (such as those between an academic scientist and a biotechnology company). The study also briefly explores U.S. industry-industry research collaborations and collaborative arrangements between foreign companies and U.S. firms, universities, and academic researchers.
