Electrochemical Oxidation of Methane at Metal and Oxide Electrodes. Annual Report December 1, 1986-December 1, 1987

The electrochemical oxidation of methane was investigated at Pt, Ir, Rh, and Ru electrodes in 85% H(3)PO(4) and 140 C. Rates for Pt and Rh electrodes were 4.2 and 2.7 times 10 to the 6th power A cm-2 (based on real surface area). Theoretical modeling of the electrosorption of CH4, OH, and O atoms was performed. These studies suggest that Noble metal electrodes such as Pt and Rh are covered with OH groups at potentials more cathodic than previously thought.
