Small Community Revitalization Strategies for the Northwest

Intense international competition and rapid technological development are changing the character of the Northwest economy. These changes have had a particularly profound impact on the region's small communities, leaving many towns struggling and doubting their futures. An understanding of this emerging economy and development strategies best suited to it can contribute significantly to the ability of a community to maintain its economic vitality. With this in mind, a three-day workshop examining 'Small Community Revitalization Strategies for the Northwest' was held with participants from five Northwest states. Particular emphasis was placed on development 'practitioners' -- persons working on a day-to-day basis in individual small communities. The program featured rural revitalization experts from the Northwest and throughout the country. The first day was designed to further participants' understanding of the economic and social conditions affecting their communities. Days two and three explored revitalization strategies particularly appropriate to these conditions. The workshop closed with a case-study exercise.
