While the majority of jobs by the year 2000 will require some postsecondary education, about 20% of the nation's workers read at an eighth-grade level or lower. The publication contains the proceedings of a conference held in Washington, D.C. on October 3-4, 1988, to examine the growing problem of workplace illiteracy and to report on how some employers and government agencies have successfully addressed it.
