State-of-the-Art Assessment of the Pulsed Electrochemical Machining Process

Pulsed Electrochemical Machining (PECM) is a significant technologicalimprovement of continuous current ECM. PECM is inherently suited to on-line adaptive control; this controllability improves the precision and repeatability of the electrochemically machined part. PECM promises to replace ECM with continuous current in many industrial settings, but significant applied research needs to be conducted. PECM has many characteristics which should make it a technology of first choice. Effective education of potential industrial customers of this viable emerging technology must be tied to research and development work to ensure its wider acceptance. The primary objective of this state-of-the-art assessment was to critically review the Pulsed Electrochemical Machining (PECM) process via surveys of existing literature and patents, as well as through site visits and personal interviews.
