Precision of Articulation in Repeated Phrases.

Phrases are frequently said back in clinical practice and in teaching artistic speech; also instructors in foreign languages often teach pronunciation by oral example and repetition. The implication in the technique is that some aspect of the model carries over to the repetition. The goal may be precise articulaTion. Again, in military communication, the message is read back to assure the sender that it was correctly received. Reception, in turn, is partially a function of precise articulation on the part of the sender. This paper reports a study of the relationship between the precision of articulation of the stimulus phrase and the repetition - this in a circurmstance in which attention of the listener- speaker was focused upon the right message, not an aesthetic characteristic of speech.
