Plant Colloids for Evaluation as Plasma Extenders and for Complexing with Protein Sparing Substances.

Several methods were investigated to prepare dried glycerol pectate having, upon reconstitution with distilled water, the same characteristics as 4% glycerol pectate in saline. In addition to spray drying, previously shown to be quite kuccessful, solvent precipitation, lyophilization and drum drying were studied. An unsuccessful attempt was made to obtain a satisfactory dry product by acetone precipitation. A 4% solution in saline of glycerol pectate, properly degraded and partially saponified, was precipitated with acetone and due to incomplete precipitation the yield was low and the properties were changed as part of the low molecular weight constituents remained in the mother liquor. Lyophilization studies with Pectin NF glyceride gave a colorless dry product dissolving very readily to a clear solution. Drum drying tests with Pectin NF glyceride and glycerol pectate demonstrated that under vacuum as well as at atmospheric pressure satisfactory products can be obtained with excellent dissolving properties.
