The experimental Digital Line-Store Standards Converter1 tbuilt in Research Department served to demonstrate the good picture quality obtainable with digital techniques, even when using a comparatively simple linear interpolation aperture utilizing information from only two lines of the input picture. The work described in this report was a study, mainly theoretical, into the requirements for a more sophisticated interpola¬tion system involving the use of signal contributions from more than two lines. Computer optimization techniques were used in determining the most suitable aperture shape using contributions from different numbers of successive field lines, and a block schematic diagram was derived for a proposed experimental interpolator to be used with the experimental digital line-store converter. A series of subjective tests is in hand to establish the basic interpolation parameters of a converter for service use. The results of these tests will be given in a further report.
