摘要

The determination of cloth strength is not simple since fibre strength is governed by the existence of occasional flaws along the entire length of the fibre under consideration. When subjected to tensile stress, a fibre will fail when the stress concentration at a dominant flaw reaches the critical fracture stress. Furthermore, under stress, the flaws will tend to enlarge in such a way as to cause stress concentrations at the flaw tip to increase. This results in the flaw to propagate at progressively higher speed until the stress concentration reaches the critical fracture stress, and failure occurs. Failure due to repeated application of stress is known as fatigue failure and it governs the durability of glass fibre filter cloth.
