The use of interactive digital simulation languages in testing the performance of reduced order models produced by a truncation method is demonstrated. The pole truncation techniques are simple and fast while digital simulation provides a means for testing the transient and steady state performance of reduced models. A tenth order analytical model of an electric furnace electrode controller was successfully reduced to a third order model. The characteristics of the step response of the various lower order models produced by pole truncation are obtained, allowing the lowest order model with satisfactory performance to be readily chosen. In the demonstration case the response time of the controller is accurately maintained by the low order models down to order three.
