The performance of a pole truncation technique and a method of concatenating poles are tested in reducing a tenth order analytical model of an electrode position controller to third order. Fast interactive digital simulation is used to determine the accuracy of the lower order models. The response time and overshoot data for both techniques and all orders down to three are given. This step response analysis show an order three lower overshoot for the pole truncation technique with slightly higher response time. The techniques are successful in a high enough proportion of cases to justify trying such methods as a first approach.
