Principle of Virtual Work and Associated Variational Principles

Results provided by the principle of virtual work in continuum mechanics, and in particular by the primal principle are reviewed. Mixed, hybrid, and complementary energy principles in the linear and nonlinear three-dimensional case are presented. Principles relating to Kirchhoff-Love shells are studied in the nonlinear case. Important considerations for numerical applications are mentioned. The classical criterion of static stability is extended to the whole family of these principles.
