B-Scan Displays of Ultrasonic Time-of-Flight Diffraction Tests of Compact Tension Specimens

Three fatigue cracked 120mm wide compact tension specimens are inspected using the ultrasonic time of flight technique. An atlas of B scan pictures obtained with ten different probe arrangements is provided to obtain data on crack structure and transparency. Different probe shoes and test frequencies are used for comparative purposes. Two of the cracked specimens are sectioned, examined and compared with the nondestructive tests (NDT) results. Conclusions are drawn regarding crack sizing, the relation between NDT results and crack structure, the value of various probe arrangements, and the probes.
